Timing is Everything: Start the Process Now

New licensing pathways coming into effect in July 2026 are reducing barriers for eligible UK-trained physicians seeking to practise in British Columbia. Combined with streamlined immigration processes and strong demand for family physicians across Vancouver Island, these changes are creating new opportunities for physicians considering a move to Canada. Even if you’re not ready to relocate immediately, starting the conversation now can help you understand your options, identify the right community and practice opportunity, and build a plan that works for your timeline.

More than Recruitment

Relocating across the Atlantic is a major life decision. Island Docs is a non-profit physician recruitment initiative developed by the Divisions of Family Practice across Vancouver Island to support physicians and their families as they explore a move to British Columbia. Our focus is not simply on finding you a job, but on helping you identify the right clinic, community, and lifestyle fit. We also connect candidates with trusted provincial partners who provide guidance on licensing, immigration, and relocation, helping make the transition as smooth and informed as possible.

Is it actually possible for me to get licensed in BC?

For many UK-trained physicians, the answer is yes. Recent changes to licensing and immigration pathways have made the process faster and more straightforward than it has been in the past. While every physician’s circumstances are unique, many UK doctors are surprised to learn that a move to British Columbia is more achievable than they expected.

Our team can help you understand the pathway that best aligns with your training, experience, and career goals, and connect you with the resources needed to navigate the process with confidence.

What would practising medicine in BC actually look like?

British Columbia offers a variety of practice models, from traditional family practice to team-based care, urgent and primary care centres, hospital work, longitudinal care, and focused practice opportunities. Many physicians appreciate the flexibility available and the ability to shape a career that aligns with their professional interests and personal goals. Increasingly, physicians are also practising as part of interdisciplinary teams that include nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.

Will I have more control over my practice than I do in the NHS?

Many physicians who relocate from the UK tell us they value the increased autonomy available in BC. Depending on your practice model, you may have greater flexibility over your schedule, the demographic of your patient panel, workload, and clinical focus.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach, allowing physicians to build a practice that works for them and their families.

How much can family physicians earn in British Columbia?

Family physicians in British Columbia can choose from several compensation models, including the Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) Payment Model, fee-for-service, contracts, salaried positions, and blended models. The compensation structure you choose will depend on your practice style, scope of work, and career goals.

The new LFP Payment Model has become a popular option for physicians providing comprehensive family medicine. It recognizes not only patient visits, but also indirect patient care, clinical administration, and the size and complexity of a physician’s patient panel. Many physicians relocating from the UK are surprised by both the earning potential and the flexibility available within BC’s healthcare system.

We encourage prospective candidates to explore the available payment models and compensation calculators to better understand how different practice styles may translate into income. Learn more about family physician compensation in BC: Family Physician Payment Models; LFP Compensation Calculator

Can I choose the community and practice model that's right for me?

Absolutely. Vancouver Island offers everything from vibrant urban centres to smaller coastal and rural communities. Whether you’re seeking a busy city practice, a close-knit community, team-based care, or a more flexible lifestyle, we work with you to identify opportunities that align with your professional and personal priorities.

What is it really like to live on Vancouver Island?

Vancouver Island offers an exceptional quality of life. Residents enjoy mild weather, stunning natural beauty, world-class outdoor recreation, vibrant arts and culture, and welcoming communities. Many people are drawn here for the lifestyle and choose to stay for the sense of balance, connection, and opportunity it provides.

Are there good schools for my children?

Education is a major draw for many families relocating to Vancouver Island. The region offers excellent public and independent schools, with a strong emphasis on outdoor learning, creativity, and student well-being. Many schools incorporate outdoor and experiential learning throughout the curriculum, helping students build confidence, resilience, and a strong connection to nature. Older students also benefit from access to highly regarded post-secondary institutions, including the University of Victoria and Vancouver Island University.

What about my spouse's career opportunities?

Many relocating families have dual careers, and we understand how important this consideration can be. Depending on your spouse’s profession and location preferences, there may be a wide range of employment opportunities available. We can help connect you with local resources and information to support your family’s transition.

How do I find the right community for my family?

Every family is different. Some are looking for excellent schools and urban amenities, while others prioritize outdoor recreation, affordability, or a slower pace of life. We take the time to understand what’s important to you and help identify communities that are the right fit for your family’s lifestyle and goals.

What immigration and relocation support is available?

You won’t be navigating the move on your own. Island Docs works closely with partners including Health Match BC and Island Health, who provide support with licensing, immigration, and relocation planning. Our role is to help match you with the right clinic and community while connecting you with the resources and expertise needed to make your move to British Columbia as smooth as possible.

When should I start planning my move to BC?

Earlier than you might think. Licensing, immigration, and family planning considerations can take time, and exploring your options does not commit you to making a move. Many physicians begin by having an informal conversation months or even years before they ultimately relocate.

Why start exploring now?

Significant licensing changes taking effect in July 2026 are creating new pathways to full licensure for eligible physicians trained in the United Kingdom and other select jurisdictions. Combined with streamlined immigration processes and strong demand for family physicians across Vancouver Island, these changes are making a move to British Columbia more accessible than ever before.

Even if you’re not ready to relocate immediately, starting the conversation early gives you time to understand your options, explore communities and practice opportunities, and build a plan that works for you and your family.

WHY FAMILY PHYSICIANS LOVE IT HERE

“In the summer we can walk down to the ocean and eat our lunch. Plus a lot of national athletic programs and elite sport programs are based in Victoria. If there is an interest in the elite athlete population there is a lot going on. It is an exciting environment to work in.”

Dr. Vanessa Young

The best thing about being in Victoria is having access to fresh air, ocean breeze, and waves that crash down… The general attitude is a mix of productivity and relaxation.

Dr. Jody Young

Campbell river is a very welcoming community. I have enjoyed starting a practice and new medical clinic surrounded by supportive colleagues.

Dr. Angela Logan

There are not many places that offer what we have here. I really like the ocean. I can hop in my kayak after work and go for a paddle without even leaving the parking lot.

Dr. Elizabeth Rhoades

Can’t think of a better place to live and practice… from skiing on Mount Washington, playing in the river, sailing in the ocean, and everything in between. I find the community a perfect size to raise a family. I also find the medical communities outstanding, energetic, and committed. The new North Island Hospital should make this valley an even better place to practice.

 Dr. Kevin Swanson

After completing residency in Campbell River, we decided to settle in Port Hardy because of the available outdoor activities, as well as the allure of full service rural family medicine with 24h emergency department call, first nations outreach, occasional obstetrics, etc. We love the access to the outdoors, especially for our small children.
